Health Information Exchange Coming Soon
What is a health information exchange (HIE)?
A health information exchange (HIE) is a secure, electronic way for your health care providers to share information about the health care services you get. Health care providers include:
- Hospitals.
- Doctors.
- Labs.
- Pharmacies.
- Health insurance plans.
A HIE must follow the security rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This protects your health information. It also helps make sure only the people involved in your care see your health information.
Why are HIEs important?
A HIE can make your health information available to your doctor during routine visits and also in the case of an emergency. It allows your providers to get a more complete picture of your health. Sharing health information can help you and your providers make more informed decisions about your care based on your unique medical needs.
What information is shared through a HIE?
Here are examples of information that may be shared through a HIE:
- Test results.
- Medicines.
- Allergies.
- Illnesses.
- Treatments.
- Doctor visits.
- Hospitalizations.
What if I choose not to share my health information?
You have the right to stop having your information included in, made available to, or exchanged through a HIE. This is called opting out. Your information could be exchanged through a HIE unless you opt out. You also have the right to change your opt-out status at any time.
